   July 2008

Sweden qualified for UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ in Finland as Group 2 winners after a comfortable victory in the Republic of Ireland.
The win maintains Sweden's 100 per cent in the section after six games and they have yet to concede a goal either. Karolina Westberg opened the scoring in the 24th minute heading home a Sara Thunebro cross. Nine minutes later it was two as Victoria Svensson got away and lifted over on-rushing Ireland goalkeeper Emma Byrne. The visitors went into half-time three goals to the good after Josephine Öqvist finished from another Thunebro centre.
There was no further scoring until 16 minutes from time when Westberg got her second and substitute Lotta Schelin rounded off the triumph late on. Ireland will now finish third in the section and still have a chance of joining runners-up Italy in the play-offs. A point in Sweden on 1 October would considerably boost Ireland's hopes of being one of the four third-placed teams in the six groups with the best record against the top quartet.
